Bungie did not sell Halo. Bungie was bought by Microsoft and they developed Halo during that time. This means that when Bungie gained its independence Microsoft still owned Halo.

Okay Microsoft did not own bungie, they just had a tight contract and bungie wasn't a big company at that time so they needed money and support and Microsoft being the dicks they always have been, made bungie get into that tight contract so they could take whatever bungie has made in case they ever wanted to leave them

And yes it was a good idea to give 343 Industry's halo because 343 has worked with bungie before and people from bungie transferred over to 343 so they could continue to work on halo. Imagine someone else getting halo, it would suck
