I believe in God, Christianity, Catholicism to be exact. And no, there is not something that could change my current belief. I hope this thread stays civil.

"Fundie"? What does that even mean?
-
It's slang for a religious fundamentalist.
-
Ah, I get it now, that's actually pretty funny. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
-
While I strongly disagree with the metaphysical claims of your religion, my main problem lies with the results. I'm not trying to instigate a debate here, just a friendly discussion: what is your opinion on the authorities of Catholicism? The church; Mother Theresa etc, who horribly abuse their power to the detriment of society?
-
While I don't believe it's always the Church's fault, I can easily say there have been bad people and good people in the Church, good and bad Popes, and good or bad Priests/Bishops/whatever. But the point is, God gives us all free will, and a path to follow, and said bad Pope for example, stopped following this path once he was in office. Making bad things happen. There are always bad people in every organization, and the ones in the Church seem darkest, as it's supposed to be a beacon of light. Any position of power, whether church or government or store manager, can be taken advantage of, letting you chose the path of corruption and evil. This is my personal opinion, and a relatively educated one at that. This is also perhaps a slightly simpler explanation then I might normally give, but the restrictions of text are so...limiting I guess, they're also quite tedious. I hope I understood this comment of yours correctly.
-
But why would you choose to associate yourself with an institution that supported Hitler and Mussolini simply because the ideology of communism was contrary to the church's nature, while fascism was all too fitting?
-
Because I believe in the Church's teachings.
-
And? I believe that most of the commandments found in the Decalogue to be moral, it doesn't make me a Jew.
-
And what?
-
Just because you believe in some of the actions and teachings of the church, why should that be reason to subscribe to their authority?
-
When did I say I don't believe in everything it teaches? I honestly believe in God, and that he has given the Catholic Church the authority to rule over the way I worship him and the way his wishes are fulfilled. The one thing I do not agree with, is corrupt and crooked members of the church that mess stuff up. And God does not expect me to agree with them either.
-
So you believe in the condemnation of condoms? You believe Mussolini was justified in his actions? If you believe in everything the Catholic church teaches, you subscribe to those as well.
-
I do. But something tells me since I don't know that much about Mussolini that you are interpreting it wrong, or, perhaps you are right, in which case I could do more research. But quite honestly I'm not looking to learn from you, as you seem a little 'narrow'. It's not an insult, just my personal opinion of your character, knowing you only from this conversation over perhaps the heaviest subject on earth.
-
On the contrary I find you to be narrow. But that's because I see religion as irrational and immoral. But you are totally free to make the choice for yourself to I respect that.
-
Not to change the subject, but this is interesting to me, we both are quite opinionated, being on opposite sides of the spectrum, but have avoided (mostly) a hostile argument. A rare occurrence indeed.
-
YOU -blam!-ING WHAT, M8? ILL KNOCK YA -blam!-ING LIGHTS OUT, FAM!
A rare occurrence indeed, friend
-
*CA-CHUNCK CHUCK* IM GONNA PUMP YOU FULL OF SHOTGUN, HURRHURR YE RADICAL BASTID.
lol, too funny.
-
I'm not religious either, but why do you need to continue questioning someone's beliefs after they've explained themself?
-
It's called a discussion. If you met a member of the KKK beating a black man and you asked why, you wouldn't just drop the situation when he says 'because I'm racist'. I don't feel he has explained himself comprehensively, I think his logic of 'well I agree with them on some things so I subscribe to them fully' is fallacious and I'm interested to see how he chooses to express his opinion in the face of adversity. I am not degrading him, I am talking to him with a, hopefully, mutual respect.
-
First of all, a member of the KKK would not say "I'm racist," he'd give a reason he would feel is justified, just like Sheperd said. And calling someone's believe fallacious after he has explained himself is not "mutual respect," it's rude.
-
Why does it concern you? It is within my opinion that his thought process is illogical so I countered it. Whether you find it rude or not is irrelevant. I wasn't satisfied with his answer, so I continued the discussion. Much like you are doing after I justified myself... Hmm?
