I'm not disagreeing with you on evolution, but the climate change thing is something that needs to be dropped with regards to the GOP.
Now, I'm not going to get into whether or not there should be new climate legislation (which would be on top of the preexisting ones, mind you), but I can say without a doubt that it simply doesn't matter whether or not the US enacts climate laws. One country restricting emissions won't do a single thing against climate change (Note: I am not confirming or denying it, I really don't feel like arguing about that).
I mean, what about other countries like Russia, China and India that have huge populations and/or industries but don't really have any legislation concerning it? Shouldn't some of my environmentalist friends be tearing them apart just as much as the GOP?
Climate laws are simply futile, wasted effort. If other countries who emit more than us won't enact laws, then what's the point in wasting our time trying to fix it on our own or arguing about it when we could be, you know, trying to save the economy so people will have food to eat?
Seriously!

Edited by Quantum: 7/17/2013 7:13:57 AMThe problem with this logic is that if each country applied this mentality then nothing will ever be done. The initial investment now could potentially save billions of dollars in the future in healthcare costs and disaster relief. Pollution is still a problem and focusing more on green energy is not a bad thing. It also makes the US more energy independent, something that both political parties have promised to do. While I have no faith in Russia, don't knock off China and India so quickly. They have potential in this regard. China has been heavily investing in nuclear reactors and so has India IIRC, so that's a start.

And those that are worried about climate change in Russia, China, and India are saying the same things to themselves: Why should I do anything if nobody else is going to do anything? You end up perpetuating a vicious downward spiral. Somebody has to do something, even if nobody else is, and keep on doing it, in spite of everyone else.

And that was the exact response that I was expecting. The problem is that the governments of Communist China and Socialist Russia (sorry) are too embedded in their own problems and lunacy to give a damn, and they account for a healthy chunk of emissions. It isn't that countries keep passing the buck or keep waiting on someone else to do it first, but that the ones that need to care don't, and so countries that don't emit as much need not bother themselves with climate change. Am I saying that we shouldn't enact legislation here? Not necessarily. But my point is that we should fix our own problems that threaten us daily before we worry about something that'll take a million international meetings to fix.

That's a cop out. There will always been our own problems to fix here. They'll never go away. Any that we fix will spawn new ones to fix. It's a convenient way to shrug off the blame and responsibility.

I don't think we can criticize China and Russia for being embedded in their own "lunacy" when we have representatives in the House Science committee that are scientifically illiterate.
