The movie coasts by on character interactions similar to how the Avengers did. Good special effects don't make a good movie. A passionate, loving tribute to a genre might though. [spoiler]And it tributed [i]my[/i] f*cking genre[/spoiler]

If you want a social commentary, watch some arthouse garbage. Effects don't make a movie, fun makes a movie. And Pacific Rim is very, very fun.

It isn't trying to be thought provoking, it's a throwback to the old giant monster movies. It owns that and doesn't try to be more than it is. It's a good movie because its a FUN movie. If you walk into a theater for Pacific Rim expecting some kind of social commentary with giant monsters and robots, you clearly don't know who this movie is catering to.
