The game was meant to be cruel and ruthless to you. The designer has said so. He ASKED invaders to be as cruel as possible. It was by design.

  • All that does is screw over newcomers to the games. The first playthrough shouldn't be plagued by bored streamers trolling PvPs with level 50 builds.

  • Haha, it seems you don't quite understand Dark Souls. This isn't Call of Duty. This isn't Halo 4. This isn't Dora the Explorer: The Video Game. This is friggin Dark Souls. They don't give a shit if you have a hard time. It's what they want. You think they've tried to make it nice and comfortable for newcomers? Nope. They're filtering newcomers. Dark Souls is a game for people with enough patience to get to the end, not a game for every person who attempts to succeed. A video game like video games used to be; not for everyone.

  • Dude, the video game is hard enough without trolls coming in and ruining the experience. You can't reach out to the masses if you alienate newbies. It's a simple add on that doesn't take away the difficulty from the game at all, it just gets rid of the asshats who have nothing better to do. One streamer I watched last night said he stopped keeping count of his hours months ago, but when he was keeping count, he was up to 1500 hours of PvP and PvE. TROLL You get a guy who has only played for 30 hours or so at around level 50, so obviously there's nothing they can do about someone like that. The system needs to be opt in/opt out. Not get -blam!- because we want this to be a bad experience for you.

You still don't understand. Dark Souls isn't about reaching out to the masses. these systems you're complaining about are by design. You act as if FromSoftware isn't aware that it's alienating the masses; they know they are, and that's what they want. Believe it or not, some people enjoy games were you are punished for your missteps. Where things can suddenly happen outside your control and you can't do anything about it. That's part of the thrill. The idea of being vulnerable to being invaded at any crucial time gets your heart pumping. It may be a bad experience to you, but it's a great experience to a small few. That small few is who FromSoftware is looking to reel in.

  • It's literally my only issue with the game, and one that if they changed would grow the shit out of their community. If they want to keep it like that, fine, but they are being idiots doing so.

  • And that's your opinion. Dark Souls doesn't change for the masses, the masses change for Dark Souls. They'd be happy capturing the attention of just 100 people, as long as those hundred understand what the game is about.

  • If From Software really had that view, they'd be bankrupt. 100 people cannot keep any game afloat. Dark Souls is successful as is because it is genuinely fun to play once you get the hang of it, but if you cut out the douchebaggery, you reach a hell of a lot more people, and ultimately that is what any developer wants, for their work to reach as many people as possible.

  • That "doughbaggery" is what makes Dark Souls what it is though. Obviously there's enough people out there who genuinely enjoy a hardcore experience for FromSoftware to stay afloat.

  • Hardcore experience doesn't have to include the douchebaggery of trolling invaders.

    I never said that. Take a look: http://www.vg247.com/2012/01/31/dark-souls-creator-masochistic-made-the-game-for-himself/ https://forums.playfire.com/general-discussion/thread/101358

  • Then don't connect to the internet? I've gone through about 5 playthroughs and I have never connected to the internet once.

  • It's a lot of trouble to disconnect my Xbox from the internet. And I shouldn't have to. They should have worked it in so you can't be open for invasions from other players if you don't want to be (without being hollowed)

  • Can't you just be hollow?

  • Sure, but there are advantages to being human. Like summoning and higher curse resistance.

  • And those advantages have to be weighed out by disadvantages. That's the point. Being able to summon friends to help also means you are vulnerable to being invaded.
