The E3 demo was obviously scripted. They just wanted to show off how it could be when playing through destiny. You would be working on your mission and wander into a somewhat designated public zone where a group of drop ships come into the atmosphere and start going rampant. Doesn't mean it will happen every time you enter that public zone, but that is an area where something might happen.
