Don't worry, some places are getting google fiber in the U.S. Although it is only a few big city right now, Kansas City and Austin are two I know of.
In case you don't know what google fiber is

And truthfully, the reason the U.S. has crappy Internet is because we are a giant country. That's really the only reason, same reason our texting and everything cost more. If we were smaller we would have faster Internet. Plain and simple.

150 mbps seems to work fine for me. Does anyone know if they're gonna release Google Fiber in England?
-
Almost know where in America gets 150mbps And most probly later
-
Awesome. I heard that Google was working to get it up to 2TB download and 1TB download but that's probably not for a while yet. That's like 2Tbps. And there's only one company in England that offers more than 30 mbps

lolno. It's because there isn't any competition in the majority of markets. Telecoms are free to do whatever they want. AT&T and Time Warner fight tooth and nail whenever a city announces they want to provide their citizens with municipal broadband. They know if those networks are established they'll be forced to compete. The fact that you think texting costs more because we're a large country is retarded.
-
Considering I live in a small town, and have my own Internet and texting off neither one of those companies or ones that the OP posted, the argument that "there is no competition" is invalid. If we were smaller country we wouldn't have as many markets, thus we wouldn't have to compete for prices.
-
No it really is because their is no competition. In my area there are multimilion dollar homes across the street that are brand new. The neighborhood has three providers. TIme Warner Cable, AT&T, and Comcast. They offer the same services. Everybody pays about $70 a month because it's a middle class neighborhood with exception to new developments. However, we all get 1Mbps internet. Why is that? Well AT&T and Verizon divided up our area. Verizon controls one neighborhood, while AT&T controls the other and they use their same node to provide internet. One that is very far away. Oh and did I mention I live right near Dallas, where AT&T was founded? Why give people better service for the same price? They have us all stuck getting crappy internet for Gigabit prices yet we get a thousandth of that. They're making money and they don't care. Do you want to see competition? When Google announced Google Fiber for Austin, Texas, AT&T had a panic attack. Here's Google, offering Gigabit speeds for $70 a month, while we're sitting here making people pay $90 for megabit speeds. Guess what they did? They made plans to start a gigabit network in Austin. They would lose money to Google, so they were forced to upgrade. That is competition.
-
You said there is no competition, then at the end you said their us competition. So what is your point, you contradicted yourself.
-
There is no competition except for one city, and the plans haven't even happened yet. 99.999% of the US Internet is controlled and divided by ISP's that give us crappy service. Most of the smaller businesses are simply subsidiaries of the larger ones.
-
Not all smaller businesses are. Their are plenty of independent companies. Look at my above post.
-
And yet Internet is still under a lack of completion and terrible because of the monopoly ISP's have.
-
What is your internet speed?
-
1Mbps download and .3 up
-
See i get more than that, and i am in a smaller city, and use a locally type company. But also there are big companies in my city too. The fact that it is terrible because they have a monopoly is invalid. I get a higher than that, and i don't help the monopolizing companies. Like i said before, it is because we have so many companies and we are so big is the reason we have bad internet. We can't stretch a internet line across the great plains, that would be terrible. But in other countries they can do things like that, because they arn't as big.
-
Except the reason I have bad Internet in my area is because the ISP giants divided up the area, one gets one neighborhood while the other gets the other neighborhood. Then they make deals with Comcast and Time Warner where no matter what everyone here will be paying a premium for complete crap.
-
The fact that they divided up the area doesn't mean anything. In my city we have some of the giants. We have AT&T, we have Verizion, we have Comcast. Yet, we get good internet. If out whole country was centered in a place, sorta like England, where everyone is in a dense place, we would be ok. But the U.S. is so spread out, we can't be like that.
-
The fact they divided up the area definitely means something. If Verizon is the only provider in a neighborhood then why should they give a better service? To be nice? They are getting more money by making people pay through the roof for service that barely costs anything to provide. And yes, I get it that not 100% of the US can have that good of Internet. However the fact is that even in large population centers, Internet sucks. If you live in a city of 1,000,000 plus then you should be getting what other countries get. Bottom line. However our ISP's divide the areas up to where they are the only thing there to provide. Your town may be different, it may not. Most likely there is a small area where one of the giants has full control. Either way 99% of the US Internet infrastructure runs on a monopolized business.

With someone like Google Competition becomes real
-
Competition is competition, that's why companies buy out other companies. Their is plenty of competition. It grows and reduces everyday.

Edited by nightspark: 6/29/2013 4:52:03 PMSo list all the hardwire ISP's in your area.

I have no idea who all is my area. We have AT&T, Verizon, Metrocast, C-Spire, I'm sure we have more I can't think of or don't know. And I'm sure other places in the country have others that are small area type companies. Because we have a big country not everyone can be connected to the same provider.
