Dear Americans...
I am British. I have a British accent. This fact is to me, rather mundane. When somebody has a British accent, I am not surprised. Equally, other accents are not at all surprising to me, be they American, French, Yorkshire, or anything else.
However, I've just spent a week in the US, and one thing I can say is that a disturbingly high proportion (>50%) of the people I met were horrifically impressed with the fact that I have a British accent...
What's the dealio, homeboys? What is it about my dulcet tones that moves you so?

A lot of Americans are fascinated by foreign cultures or accents.

I don't really get it either. People in America have different accents too. New York accent, Boston accent, Southern accent, it really makes no difference.

Not gonna lie, being English in America will likely get your all the ladies. Use your gift wisely. Of course being an American in England will likely get me laughed at and made fun of :(

People are just oblivious to cultures so whenever they meet someone with an accent, they jump all over him/her.

Every since we went through our rebellious faze where we decided "We don't need to live under your house or your rules dad!" So our deep deep Daddy issues make us latch onto anything British.

Because people hear people with their own accent so much they forget they have one, so when they hear a different one they find it funny... People are easily amused.

For some reason we're fascinated with the British accent. I think Australian is cooler myself, but we Americans have some odd fascination with the British accent. Tis a mystery

Americans make fun of other Americans' accents. I've been told I have no accent despite living in the south, however, people make fun of each other with heavier accents.

2 RepliesLots of people just prefer different accents from what they are used to. I could find even the most moronic conversation tolerable if it was being told in accent I'm not used to hearing.

Most Americans have never left their country and think it sounds strange. Don't take it personally.
