My mom's the same way, but she knows that I have a certain affection for them and accepts it. She won't usually buy them for me, but she'll turn a blind eye on what I choose to use my own money on. Like I said, if you're sincerely interested, i'd just let her know and try to have a calm and reasonable conversation about it. And you don't have to go out and buy a shit ton of them or even very large ones. My own collection started out with just a small pocket knife that i'd carry for utility purposes, and i'd recommend the same thing for anyone else starting out. Working your way up is always the best course of action.

I think (almost) any sort of gun will get more of a reaction than a knife, just because it's seen more as a weapon while knives could be seen as simple tools, which they are mostly...aside from the ones specifically made for combat and such, but even they can be used for utility.
