Every user has what's called a "bungie.net membership id" or "mid" - that's the number you see. Mine is 1, for example. In order to streamline the create new user dialog, we don't ask for a unique name during account creation, we just ask for a display name and email, and set your unique ID to that unique number until you try and change it later. This way, you won't ever get a "that name has already been used" error trying to create an account, which, to some people, might be frustrating enough to abandon the account creation process.
