Awesome...turn-based combat has always turned me off to the series.

This is true, Final Fantasy's strong suit has always been its story... I mean battle mechanics (Variably) have been fairly good in a "Figure out the perfect strategy to take out a boss" kind of way, but this is by far more impressive.
