So you have two accounts, PSN and Xbox live, correct? and you want to merge them into one?
If that is the case, you can follow the steps below.
He may have followed these steps below.
1.) Create a "Dummy" login method that you aren't currently using(Like Gmail)
2.) Link that to the account you wish to unlink.
3.) Unlink the account you wish to keep or just unlink, from the now "Dummy" account
4.) Walk away from the "Dummy" account and use the login that you unlinked how ever you want!
Let me know if that makes sense or helps out! Or if that is even the issue you are dealing with.

Oh, in addition, I can't log in or link to the problem XBL account due, presumably, to the username change. Fun times!

Thanks. Makes perfect sense, but hasn't really helped. I followed a guide eerily similar to this one to arrive where I am now, which is: (modified username) XBL account linked to nothing PSN account linked to an XBL account which brings up the authentication error when trying to unlink it Facebook account linked to nothing Google account linked to nothing My critical error, I believe, was absentmindedly creating 3 _bnet_ accounts in addition to the original XBL account (using PSN, Facebook, and Google accounts) and trying to link those to one another, all the while thinking that surely this isn't what I should be doing. If the relatively unused PSN (besides this thread), Facebook, and Google bnet accounts could be nuked, I think I'd get myself back on the right path of linking everything to the original bnet account (powered by and linked to my XBL account). Lesson one in not filling in forms when you should be sleeping.
