I think his comment was a typo or misunderstanding. We clearly will be able to choose a race and class immediately. Doesn't make sense to be human and then become another race.

I like to think the races are still human - just Awoken are perhaps altered by the Traveller and EXO are as a result of repairing them from massive injuries. Or something.

I guess I always thought of the other two "races" as still being human - or post human. So maybe the statement is still correct just not clear.
