  • It's August 7th to 11th. But the tickets were really really hard to come by. So unless you got em yesterday chances are you're not getting them now. A few were being scalped for $250 (they cost $50) but those have since vanished from the Steam Marketplace.

  • Ah. I've never tried DOTA, though I play so much League that I really should to at least have some perspective on both games as I know they are very different. I'll have to watch a stream or something.

  • Hah, I'm always happy to convert. It's a hard sell and I try not to sugar coat it for anyone. LoL is like bowling with bumpers. DOTA is like bowling blindfolded. Since I have never played LoL I cannot detail every specific difference but some of the biggest ones are that in DOTA, everyone start's every game on an equal field. I hear about runes and leveling up and shit in LoL, there is none of that in DOTA. Someone who's played 2000 games is exactly the same as a first timer. There are also denies, which scares most LoL players. You can deny allies, creeps and towers. Death gives gold AND xp to your attacker causing bigger snowballing if you're bad or have feeders on your team but the cool part is every hero is free. No tricks or bullshit, everything is available right from the get go. If you want an invite I have plenty to spare and can send one your way.

  • eh, dont agree with that last sentence in the 1st paragraph. Someone with 2000 games (i know exaggeration) is not the same as a first timer. Sure, they start of with a clean slate, but the 2000 games guy knows exactly what to buy and which character to use when looking at the Heros currently selected. Or they should. But ive played 20 or so games of Dota. I like it.

  • Well, to that degree sure but I mean I was really shocked when I found out you can like, add stat's or attribute points to your hero's in LoL. You will obviously have more experience, but it's a good thing to know in your head. Every game I remind myself the only difference between me and any other player is pure skill, nothing more.

  • Personally I do think the leveling up thing is pretty shit, though it does give people a reason to invest in a singular account. I'm way past that point though, so it doesn't matter too much to me personally. As for the entire "you have to unlock champs" thing in League, I actually like that mechanic. Aside from the fact that it sucks to be new and that you don't have a solid champ you can fall back on, being forced to unlock champs over time puts more of an emphasis on the champs you do own and helps to prevent the size of the pool of champs from overwhelming you. Not to mention, Riot is trying to do a little more than simply have a game, they're trying to bring a universe to life. DOTA just seems like generic good guys versus evil guys, there doesn't seem to be much lore or any other thought put into the characters. The same can't be said for League Champions, who have elaborate backstories, relationships amongst the various city states and other champions, and they try to bring the universe to life however they can.

  • I'll refute that the best I can, however a huge portion of DOTA's lore stems from WoW, which I never played. Then again a lot of it is from WC1~3 which I did play, so some characters do come to life. Drow Ranger, Priestess of the Moon, Goblin Techies, Troll Warlord, Furion (Natures Prophet), stuff like that. DOTA has a ton of lore but it's certainly never much of a focus. You get fun taunts or ally call out's in-game when you have certain combinations. The latest I became aware of is between two hero's. Vengeful Spirit (shendelzare) and Skywrath Mage (Dragonus), Dragonus was in love with Shendelzare and there was a big coup, which resulted in her losing her wing's and becoming a spirit seeking vengeance while Dragonus is still madly in love with her, they have some funny interactions when they're either matches as allies or foes. That one is pretty lore intensive. An obvious one is two sisters, Lina the slayer and Crystal Maiden, they hate each other and talk shit constantly when one or the other is killed. Everyone has rather hilarious lines that come up when certain things happen and almost all hero's can be tied back to a specific area or zone from WoW / Warcraft lore.
