Flying to Mt. Doom would be like trying to fly over the White House. Sauron would have seen them coming and shot them out of the sky before they even got close.

Well couldn't the eagles have flown them to the edge of Mordor, at least?

We know that the eagles are more than a match for (and vastly outnumber) the Nazgul/Fell-beasts.

Mordor has a lot of Orcs in it, some of those Orcs can shoot arrows like nobody's business.
-
The eagles can fly above the clouds, higher than mountains. No Orc is going to be able to shoot that high, let alone actually hit a moving target at that distance. The Return of the King also proves that the eagles can destroy the Fell Beasts, and Gandalf has already demonstrated that he can use his powers to scare them off (also in RotK). As far as the movies are concerned, there is no reason why they couldn't have used the eagles.
Barad Dur probably can. At least in the books.
They caught them by surprise.
As far as the movies are concerned, there is no reason why they couldn't have used the eagles.
Let's put some common sense into this argument: -Middle Earth is huge. They would have to stop at one point, and they would be very easily ambushed at that time. Sauron's servants are everywhere. -A long flight is very likely to have at least some effect on the Ring, especially because it knew that Sauron had returned at the time. -Sauron's eye would prevent the Eagles getting through, in the context of the movie.
-
The ring was stated to corrupt the most noblest of people/creatures. Hence why Gandalf refuses to take the ring. The Eagles are not exempt from that either.
-
They seemed to fly Bilbo to the Carrock with no ill effects. It's not as if you have to know about the Ring to be corrupted by it, just within its reach.

Edited by Madman Mordo: 5/5/2013 6:47:24 PMThen why wasn't Gandalf corrupted at the start of Fellowship seeing as how it was in Bilbo's pocket?
-
The ring doesn't necessarily corrupt all in its proximity. But it can.
-
Well that's not vague at all.
-
Well... No, it's not, really. The ring has a consciousness of its own and can choose if and when it wants to act.
