If those are individual atoms then what is the backround? empty space?

  • It is a copper plate. I don't know why the copper atoms don't show up in the video, but it is copper.

  • My guess would be a flat surface of atoms, but they are out of focus. Remember this is through a microscope.

  • But doesn't that mean that there's empty space between those atoms and the atoms behind? I thought that the only considerable empty space on an atomic level was between electrons and the atom core.

This isn't like a normal microscope- atoms are too small to be able to see using light, this device works by creating an electric charge to detect the exact positions of the atoms, or at least their electron shells. This data is then run through the computer to generate the image seen, so the image isn't actually of the atoms themselves but a computer-generated representation of their exact positions. Presumably it can only detect atoms at a specific range, the copper atoms being outside of it.

That makes sense. Turns out I can wrap my head around it.

  • I don't know the specifics. Maybe they're tuned to see certain atoms. I'm no physicist.
