I agree with him.
It was a bit much to send all that just to get two guys.

Two guys that detonated bombs in a public place, shot and killed cops, and tossed explosives out of their car at them as well. During situations where there is an immediate danger to the public certain things can be bypassed. Examples being needing warrants to enter private buildings and being read read your rights (assuming you're the perpetrator) when arrested.
-
If they can infringe on our rights just because of two people, then they'll do it for anything. Bomb or Gun it's still a threat. They'll just use the word "Terrorist" to get us to let them do this to us, because they know that we wont do jack shit about it. This was still a lot to throw at for two guys.

These guys killed a couple people while they were on the run and had explosives with them.

I don't think it matters whether you live close to it or not to have a say in it, I live in Boston too. I'm just saying that they didn't need to force anything on us to catch him.

>slippery slope 9/11 happened. then the spy on the people in the name of national security laws passed. not really slippery slope if it's already happened...
If they can infringe on our rights just because of two people, then they'll do it for anything.
I don't see how that follows.

Just two random people set off a few homemade explosives, and we've got the Army on them (exaggeration). I didn't see anything on the news about Citizens complaining about these guys running everywhere and restricting us from going anywhere, but rather for it. With this mind-set they'll just about call anything terrorism just to get this kind of stuff to happen.
-
Around 260 people were injured, and for all anybody knew, they had plans to detonate more explosives in more places (and, indeed, they did). I mean, from that you might be able to accurately say that "with this mind-set they'll call any multiple explosions that injure upwards of 200 people acts of terrorism just to get this kind of stuff to happen", but, what, you think this means the government's just going to call the military on any suspected murderer? Come on, have a little bit of self-respect.
-
We don't need the Government to tell us to be self-aware of the ongoing situation by enforcing a lock-down on us. People should be able to look at what happened, know that they're still out there and take it upon themselves to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. The last thing people are going to do knowing this is going on is to let anyone in, and if they know the suspect is in their area check their homes to make sure that no one is around.
-
I don't think any of us are really in a position to make the call on whether or not a lockdown in situations like that is helpful.
-
As citizens in a democratic republic we absolutely are. Or, more nuanced, we're in a position to make a call as to whether the gov't should or should not do that, regardless of efficacy.
Or, more nuanced, we're in a position to make a call as to whether the gov't should or should not do that, regardless of efficacy.
Regardless? No, it can't be regardless: any measure has to be weighed with the consequences. There's no such thing as natural law or rights.

Edited by RighteousTyrant: 5/2/2013 12:53:02 PMK. Consequences were that people had their homes invaded by armed thugs in police gear. Not worth it IMO, especially given the fact that none of that effort actually yielded the suspect they were searching for. A citizen found him after the police gave up. So there's that. Yay democracy!

u mean the government did it and blamed it on them.
