I don't think he should be killed, but I don't want him outside of a prison for a long while.

Isn't this a betrayal though? He killed his fellow soldiers he was supposed to protect.

If he was truly suffering mental disorders he should just be held in prison for most of his life (if not all of it.) However, if this was just him killing for the sake of it, he should be given the death penalty.

He was clearly pissed about something, but it's hard to say what actually triggered him to kill his companions.
