How do you feel about wage inequality among genders?

I know this would seem like an easy one sided issue, but somehow people aren't in support of measures to create gender equality for women (See Onion article here). Anyways, I'd like the hear the funny arguments against this once again, just for my reading pleasure.

  • There is no "wage gap", it's a feminist myth. I'm for equality, but lying about something like that is ridiculous and so many people believe the lie. You also linked an Onion article as "proof", that's like posting a tabloid article and saying you found proof Big Foot married the Loch Ness Monster.

Women are less aggressive in establishing pay as said in the article and are also more likely to leave the workforce. Pay isn't just about paying you for your work. Pay from your employer is also partially an incentive from your employer to stay with them and not go somewhere else. You are an investment by your employer. It costs tens of thousands of dollars to hire and train workers in corporate fields. They don't want you to leave. Women are more likely to jump ship for non-work related reasons - whether that be for family (marriage, maternity), career changes (women change career paths more often than men), and medical (women take more sick days, work less hours, and are more frequently file for disability). Fact of the matter is men are more driven, focused workers in most professional fields. I'm not saying men are always the "better" worker, but in most instances because of social pressures and natural tendencies, men are the more aggressive, career-minded, focused, and driven individuals who work longer hours and take less time off from the job.

        • I find it unfair. As I have seen many women work harder than men in their jobs.

          • Sad thing about this is: A guy that sells perfume in Victoria's Secret gets paid more than a woman that's selling perfume in the same store. You'd think that equality would be here faster. It didn't work for women in the 60's, but at least now we're getting closer to true equality.

          • Women are paid less for multiple reasons. One being that many women go on maternity leave, and get a severe reduction in pay while they are on it and once they return they aren't available to work more hours and some even leave the workforce. Also, men are more inclined to take more dangerous, manual labor needed jobs than women. These jobs will pay more because of the high risk in them and the skills required to perform them.

            • I think it's justified, considering women take more time off from work to take care of kids.

I am not for wage equality. I am for paying people based on their merit. If there's obvious discrimination, then yes, I'm for equality, but most of the time you can't prove that an employer is being biased. Pay should be based on merit and nothing else. For blue collar work, pay should be fairly equal, but for white collar, there is no reason why there should be equality between a man and a woman if one of the two is more qualified or more skilled at their job.

            • How is this even a thread? Clearly employers feel men do better at a job or else they wouldn't pay them more. It's basic economics.

                  • Sometimes women can't do a job as well as men, so logically they should get paid less.

                      • I'm not entirely sure that the "wage inequality" has to do with gender. A lot of women in the workplace today feel that they're entitled to something. Maybe their bosses don't raise their pay because they're assholes.

                          • >Statistics use median average Not an accurate way to report this data, but I won't deny it's a real occurrence. But do I support affirmative action to equalize pay? Not until there's data showing that women receive lower pay specifically because they're women.

                            • First I ask myself: Is the wage inequality actually due to sexism in the workforce? Or is it caused by a lack of drive in most women to avoid conflict? If it's the former, it should be fixed. If it's the latter, we shouldn't muck around.
