Well, there's definitely benefits if you are the console maker and publisher, but as a user? Nothing comes to mind.

Always available updates? System better suited for 'social' gaming?

Not if they continue to charge for xbox live, and if your internet connection goes out you can't play games period.

Hmmm. I don't particularly see the difference between "Oh, my Console is always online, and now that there is a new update, I'm going to download it." and "My console is offline and I am playing it and now I am connecting it online and there is a new update, I'm going to download it." beyond being able to see when new updates are availible by virtue of your console is always online. Likewise, it seems like the system would only be better suited for social gaming by virtue of weeding out all the offline players so you don't have to worry about them.

It seems to me that there's a crapload of reasons not to make it online-only and none in favour.

Well, like I said, not many for us consumers, but if you want to try to manage all that DRM stuff then always online is a solution. Probably not the best.
