Not sure what this has to do with the UK but all this tells me is that mental illness is not the cause of gun crime which just destroys that argument. Your running out of excuses guys.

  •
Not sure what this has to do with the UK
. . . it's from the BBC.
but all this tells me is that mental illness is not the cause of gun crime which just destroys that argument. Your running out of excuses guys.
wat. The point is that most mentally ill people don't go on killing sprees, and that this law is going to dramatically increase the stigma associated with treatment, which will lead to people being less willing to go get the treatment they need.

  • You made it sound like Britain was making this law or something and that it was a fail of an idea. Also you can have this law and still help those who are mentally ill, all the law is doing is putting down mentally ill on the health records so they show up on background checks. Correct me if im wrong but isn't that private information? Chances are it's already known by many people so I can't see why it will stop those people seeing treatment. If anything it's their own mental condition that's going to prevent it not the stigma that already exists.

  •
You made it sound like Britain was making this law or something and that it was a fail of an idea.
No, I found it funny that the BBC was criticising a gun control measure.
Correct me if im wrong but isn't that private information?
Yes, private--it's between the doctor and the patient. This new law now mandates that in certain instances the doctors must contact the authorities.
Chances are it's already known by many people so I can't see why it will stop those people seeing treatment. If anything it's their own mental condition that's going to prevent it not the stigma that already exists.
Paul, this was explained in the article. Mental health in America is already very stigmatised, and people go to great lenghts to keep their mental health status as low-key as possible.

I believe a gun owning background check should be considered one of those instances. Also just to show how much America really doesn't care about private information, anybody traveling from the EU to America has all of their private information including medical records sent straight to home land security. (Seriously there is no reason for this whats so ever) So this anti-privacy stuff is no surprise to me.

Excuses for what? And any moron knows someone willing to kill is disturbed, it's a heinous act. What argument does it destroy?
