I use Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, and Malwarebytes.

Actually I got my first virus a few weeks ago it was that really bad trojan that gets in through java and AVG couldn't find it. MSE found it but couldn't delete it. I had to go and remove it manually then I went and downloaded Malwarebytes just in case it ever came back.

Boot in Safe mode and then scan? That's how you get around scanning viruses that hide in active files.
