How many mL of Blood you got left? I get around a little more than 2 minutes. I do similar tactics. Grab hammer, smash to bits clean up, cut out old heart, plop the new one in. I tried ripping out the old heart, but it sticks in there pretty good.

Around 2500-2700. I got really lucky and didn't lose any blood when I smashed his ribs open.
