I haven't seen it yet (though I've been dying too) but I know a lot of people were pissed that Cloud Atlas was snubbed. From this I gather they pick dramas, dramatic biographies or true stories over anything, even movies that truly deserve it.

Cloud Atlas had drama, but it also overshot its running time by a full hour, and darted between characters and settings too quickly to fully realise any of them. It was a good movie, but it had plenty of issues.
