It seems like a very noble effort, and the diet is basically an extreme version of intermittent fasting. Wake up, eat a good breakfast, don't eat for roughly 14 hours (approximate amount of daylight in July), eat a good dinner. It can actually be physically beneficial.

They wake up at like three in the morning and barely eat simply because they're not in the mood, and they don't eat a whole lot after the day is over because you feel too full and can't sleep because of that. So they wouldn't be getting much energy from that, and if ramadan overlaps with exams then they're kinda getting screwed over really.
