my guess is the Traveller is time-travelling tech from our future; built by the descendants of the Guardians (that is, the characters we play in the game), built using tech harvested from our (eventual) defeat of the Vex, and sent back in time to give humanity a sliver of a chance for survival.
that's just one potentially cool plot twist; but Bungie have had years to come up with an even richer and more epic story arc. we'll see.

by "paradoxes" i assume you mean [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_paradox]temporal paradoxes[/url]? there are several hypothetical models for how such paradoxes are created. depending on what decisions Bungie makes regarding the nature of time travel (i.e. is time-travel one-way? is it limited to non-organic lifeforms? etc.) various theoretical scenarios exist, and Bungie gets to invent their fiction to suit their narrative. so, maybe there are potential paradoxes; and maybe not. it should also be noted that a lot of these time-travel paradoxes are theories constructed to address problems with causality, the nature of which derives from whatever Laws of Physics are accepted. in other words, causality as we usually think of it depends on "the arrow of Time" being one-way. there are plenty of "fringe" theories in physics where this is not necessarily the case and causality isn't as objective as we experience it.
