I can't imagine where anyone got the idea it was a space opera. It's the exact opposite; it's a philosophical and analytical novel. You could consider the Ender's Shadow series a space opera, but it belittles the work in my opinion.
Hmm. Maybe that was me jumping to a conclusion, then. Maybe I requested a decent scifi novel. But yeah. I gave up on it after a while. Just wasn't that interesting.
It can be kinda slow if it doesn't grab you quickly. The idea of child-geniuses is pretty stale by now. The series that branched off of Ender's Game is easily one of the most creative and interesting sci-fi stories I've ever read. If it seems to lack the magic-esque technology that adds a level of fantasy to sci-fi, the last book takes care of that in a huge way (there's basically a machine that does whatever the user wishes it to do, stuff ensues).
