It was other aliens. We were to weak and the Traveler protected us.

But how did those aliens find us when we never left our system? Hell, what brought the Traveler here? We didn't seem weak, it was a golden age. Something incredibly powerful and dangerous caught us off guard.

From what I remember hearing, correct me if I'm wrong, we left our system and explored many a world and then were nearly wiped off the face of the galaxy. What's left of us returned to Earth and ended up taking refuge in the Last City. Perhaps it was the other aliens that we interacted with, being exposed to new worlds and their diseases (diseases we'd have no experience in dealing with) and the fact that we were probably spread too thin to defend ourselves from any real threats. There could be a lot of factors that caused our ruin, but to find out what actually happened we will have to wait to play the game.

No, it's only been said that our empire spanned the solar system, not other galaxies. Bungie seems to have taken careful consideration to ground this fiction somewhat. And so we've never left our system. But the villains, they come from other parts of the galaxy, at least the Fallen and Cabal do anyway. The Vex are time traveling robots, so they don't count. And the space zombies, we know too little to discern where they came from.

Our civilization merely spanned our system, they didn't mention travelling beyond it. But alien races might have entered our solar system.
