Im not sure you are right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morality If Morality can be a system of determining the right and wrongness of something, religion does that. The tricky part is that Moral system are essentially subjective, and even the more objective ones must start from a subjective point. So while Religions with their moral systems may be wrong when viewed through a modern moral lens, it doesnt make them any less of a moral system. #honorablesniper

I think the difference is that religion tells you more or less exactly what to do and what is "right" (in their eyes) but morality is you having to judge what is right and what is not yourself. So while some religious rules may be viewed as "moral" you may think others are not, and this is when religion is distinguished from morality. Like I said, the difference is that if you follow religion you are doing what you are told and following a set of rules (whether it be right or wrong), and morality is judging for yourself what is right or wrong. I know some Christians are trying to advertise their religion as being open to interpretation and not a strict set of rules, but in the end there are some basic rules neverthelessly.

just so you know the angle i come at this from, Im an Atheist that is somewhat of a Moral Nihilist/Utilitarian. but I think the distinction you are making is that of a Rigid Moral System, that has no wiggle room or space for the follower to answer it themselves, versus a Flexible Moral System, which leaves more up to interpretation. So they are still moral systems. I think you may be getting hung up on some type of Moral Relativism. in a way Morality is kinda like people trying to figure out what Pi equals. Some may do it poorly, incorrectly, or just flat out wrong. But they have similar goals to produce an answer. A religion may say, "God says Pi is 3, and anyone who says otherwise is a heretic" the common person may say its 3.14 And those interested in Pi, may try a bit harder and leave more spaces open for discussion, 3.1415926 But since its a never ending number, its unlikely anyone will ever get it completely right. But we can try to get it as accurate as possible. the problem with religion is that it usually doesnt change, or change quickly enough, so they are consistently incorrect. but it doesnt make their answer, while wrong, any less of an answer. Just as their moral answers, while often wrong, any less of a moral answer/system.
