Hey, if some stupid drunk starts beating up his girlfriend for no good reason, he deserves a good whack to the noggin. Besides, it would be defending another person from assault. I see this as a good thing.

It's [i]much[/i] better than letting her get beaten. Here's a tip OP: if you want to avoid serious violence but can't avoid a fight, punch them in the chin. A solid strike to the jaw can knock somebody out very easily without causing permanent harm.

Actually, the court might let him off if he could prove that he acted to prevent a crime from being committed.

I'd say it's better to stand up against the alcoholic when he goes to far than to do nothing and let him assault his girlfriend.
