I might be but still, why doesn't the grown woman leave? Unless it is one of those rare cases where the guy is friends with the police I don't see how she can't turn him in on her own.

There are many reasons. Not many make sense, but its a very common pattern. Most time the abused spouse does not leave. They often stay for a while. Its very sad.
