I'm going to use a phrase I heard a long time ago: you don't buy a tractor as a pet and then get mad when it won't do backflips. Destiny is intended to be played with other people. From what we've been told, it's been built from the ground up for that purpose. Players are intended to fight together. Even if you lone wolf it, players are still intended to make changes in the world that will influence other players, and even the loners will be affected by that. It's a major aspect of the game. The core of Destiny won't be as good without other people.
In something like Diablo or Sim City, I can see why people don't like always-online connections. Those games can function fully as a single-player experience. Destiny cannot. You must be connected to get a full experience, therefore the connection is required.

I'm not sure that analogy works.

You might be right. Here's a better one: let's say I go out and buy a Tesla Model S. I drive out to the middle of nowhere, and the battery runs out of power. I have can of gas, but I of course can't use gas on an electric car. Is it reasonable for me to be upset about not being able to use gas? No, because the Tesla was never intended to function that way.

Lol, yes that one works better.
