Developers still make these such games, they're not extinct. Examples are Warsow (free), Quake Live (free), Shootmania, Xonotic (free), Painkiller, and Nexuiz. There's even a new one being made right now called Reborn by a big-wig in the FPS esports scene. I dare say the average FPS gamer, who would be a console player, doesn't know about these great PC titles because the perceived reality is that no one plays FPSs on PCs any more. I quote Bungie: "We made the game run without a mouse and keyboard. And now nobody plays shooters the way they used to play them before Halo 'cause nobody wants to." These fun, rewarding games are brutally hard on newcomers. They don't let players play how they want, they demand that players play the correct way - an attitude that is alien to the landscape of modern multiplayer games. If you want to see this genre flourish play more, even casually. Support them, don't just say it, do it. Consumers control the type of products that are created.

  • I am 100 percent sure PC arena shooters are released all the time, but you have to admit, they aren't popular anymore and you never see triple A arena shooters release these days. I was aware of Nexuiz and almost bought it but at the time I wasn't playing games that much anyway. I'll check it out soon. I barely game on the PC anymore though so that's why I never see them, but they work pretty well on consoles so they really need to make a come back. Oh god I love what you said about playing the correct way, it sounds so dumb but it's great when you need to adapt and learn skills that the top players are using because if you don't, you're screwed.

No, PC arena shooters aren't mainstream because of the present mindset of FPS players. This could change though. Consoles, due to their method of input, aren't best friends with arena shooters. It's very hard to accomplish, and I've never seen any one do it, so I'm going to go further and say, it's impossible to achieve the same level of play on consoles as on PCs. Quake Live duel on PC, same game on Xbox. The input is just too restrictive on consoles. A slower game in the same vein, similar to Halo could work on consoles. I don't like the fact that players' aim is aided by aim-assist though, and I don't think such games should appear in esports.
