I got the pleasure of seeing a 3D printer in action for the first time in my engineering class

I've been designing a part in solidworks for my Engineering class. We have a $30,000 3D printer that the students can utilize.

Yeah my school has like 10 of them and we're just a technical community college. I haven't gotten to print anything I created in SolidWorks yet but that would be awesome.

what was made?

They were just making a gear.

What was used as a material?

Some sort of plastic material. Not sure exactly what it was called. Basically a little "pen" type device puts a tiny layer of melted plastic on the area and keeps on doing that until the entire piece is made. It's really cool to watch.
