I do whatever happens to benefit my character the most at a given time. Sometimes I'm the good guy, sometimes I'm a complete asshole. In most rpgs with a measuring system I end up being completely neutral.
That being said, while I do end up being neutral, I tend to enjoy asshole dialog optipns.

I'll take Fallout as an example. Finished the game multiple times, all of them as "good" (despite stealing, and other small crimes), and saved Megaton. After about an hour, I decided I'd kill everyone with a shotgun and drag all the corpses to the bomb in the middle, and have the town to myself. ...so I guess I'm neutral?

Lol, I saved Megaton, but then ended up enslaving about half the populace of Rivet City, only to free them later when I broke those kids out of Paradise Falls. Got my money for freeing them, then sent them right back for more money from the gate guard. Apparently that makes me neutral.

Me thinks the karma system is a bit messed up...

Of course maximum profit dictates you enslave everyone in Megaton and then blow it up. Then free them and send them back to the crater for a net of neutral karma. Yeah....something seems a bit off....
