I don't like that 343i decide to make Halsey look like your average mad scientist. This started with the novels from Karin Traviss, where Halsey's character made a 180 degree turn.

They didn't change anything about Dr. Halsey's character; they introduced other characters who don't see her as the saintly mary sue she was written as and added conflict where such potential had always been ignored.
Halsey had always been a rule breaker to save her own skin--that this community, that so often states Ghosts of Onyx as one of their favorite books, can't tell from her actions in those books that she had a degree of selfishness to her, is frankly embarassing. She kidnapped a Spartan and abandoned everyone else in a crucial battle, including the Chief, so she could get to Onyx and learn what was to be learned there. Like the Didact, she is a conflicted character. Not wholly evil because she does in fact still care for humanity, but not wholly good either because, as she stated, the fact that she will never know all of the knowledge in the universe before she dies is starting to creep up on her, warping her actions. And she's a brilliant scientist who kidnapped and tortured children; her moral event horizon has already passed.
Halsey's actions in today's episode are almost definitely a ruse against 'Mdama. She'll play his game until she's safe.

They have changed everything about the character, both indirectly by approving Travissty's load of horseshit and not correcting any of the obvious errors within it as well directly through their own misrepresentations in Halo 4. Halsey has never cared about not knowing every single thing in the universe, both 343idiocy and Travissty labor under the delusion that science and information are the only things that Halsey has ever cared about and the ONLY thing that motivates any of her decisions or actions. Which so unbelievable inaccurate and off-base it's not even funny. And you seem to share their inane delusions. Halsey was not going to Onyx out of any kind of curiosity or perverse infatuation with learning everything she could, the whole reason she went there was to try and save the Spartans, both her own and the IIIs, from the Human-Covenant War and to try and make it up to them for giving them no life but one of constant military service and essentially destroying everything their lives could have been. Taking Kelly served a two-fold purpose, Kelly was the only Spartan she could attempt to save at the time, and Halsey was the only one who could hope to save the Spartans, and thus she needed protection in order to do so, hence the other reason for taking Kelly with her. Going to Onyx was never about learning, knowledge, or curiosity, it was about saving the lives of all the Spartans. And there is a very clear difference between portraying a different point of view and twisting, ignoring, and misrepresenting facts clearly established by the canon, and the writers acting as if this view is the complete and total truth and the viewpoint presented by the facts and previous canon never existed in the first place. The fact that characters who would know the same facts as we do and should know better (Ossman, Parangosky, Black Box) all think and act the same way about Halsey as Vaz does and share his misinformed, bullshit opinions. It would be one thing if they were presented as actually lying and deliberately skewing the facts to other in order to try and get their support, but continuing to think the same -blam!-ed up nonsense they spew to their little toadies flunkies and acting as if its the truth is another entirely, and it's the only view presented or acknowledged. And here we see you doing the same exact shyte...where on Earth are you getting this insanity you're spewing about torture?!? None of the Spartans were ever tortured by Halsey or any other UNSC or ONI personnel. And Halsey had nothing to do with the kidnapping of the kids either beyond heading the project and looking over the files on potential candidates that ONI came up with, it doesn't make her innocent, by any stretch of the imagination, but it's nothing like what you're proclaiming and implying...it honestly sounds like you think she went around wearing a ski-mask and all black clothing breaking into the houses and snatching kids from their beds herself!
Posted by: Chronarch What you completely fail to see is that while we as the reader have this omnipotent view of the story where we know the motivation Halsey had for kidnapping Kelly and getting Hood to send Blue Team to her, other characters don't. To everyone else, it looks like Halsey ran off in the middle of a fight to save her own skin and kidnapped a Spartan, one of the most valuable UNSC assets, then later gets even more Spartans taken out of the fight.
No, what it would like to people without all the facts is that Halsey knew about Onyx being something important in some way when it comes to the Forerunners, and that she delivered, and that is all they know. They don't have any information telling them otherwise as the only other person Halsey told why she was really there (Kurt) is now dead. Hood, Parangosky, no one, has any reason to assume anything other than going there to retrieve and extract Forerunner technologies. Occam's Razor, the simplest assumption is most often the correct one...this holds true here, there is nothing to support any other theory or assumption for why Halsey went to Onyx from the perspective of other characters. Even if they're someone who doesn't like Halsey, they have absolutely nothing to back up any other claims or assumptions.

Remember Chief Mendez? A perfect example of how characters have changed since the kilo-five trilogy. Mendez and Halsey went allong well with each other during Fall of Reach and Ghost of Onyx. They wheren't a love couple but they didn't fight or argue at every possible chance they got. During Grasslands they constantly bitched at each other. Most of the fights are a complete joke with the arguments that mendez is using. True Halsey did kidnap Kelly, but remember why she kidnapped Kelly? She kidnapped her to save her. If she hadn't done that Kelly would have died. She fled to Onyx for the same reason that cortana jumped the Pillar of Autumn to installation 04 during the battle for reach. I agree that her behavior should be different when everyone accuse her as a criminal than when everyone praises her. But it just doesn't feel right. To see a character that we have know for so long to just change so much. I also agree that her actions in today's episode are a ruse.
