  • What do you mean they still do? They stopped in Reach.

  • That's because in Reach they didn't know how scary the Demon(s) could be. By the time of Halo CE, 2 & 3, the martial prowess of the Demon Spartans were made clear and evident and so they were scared. Maybe.

  • Not really, the covenant had been fighting against humanity and the Spartans for close to twenty five years before halo reach occurs.

  • I'm aware of this. I was merely offering a possible option. Although, going off my "theory", the Covenant were the victors for most of the engagements leading up to Reach. It was after Reach, that humanity seemed to kick it into high gear, and start giving the Covenant their comeuppance. Hence, why the Grunts of Halo CE, 2, 3 seem to shit their pants at the sight of a Spartan.

  • Again, The spartans were always able to win battles on the ground, they just got wrecked in space.

  • Agreed. But Spartans at that point were secrets and not known to the human population. My guess is maybe the Covenant Intelligence would also try to keep them under wraps, to keep up the Covenant morale.

  • Well, that's my take on it and it seems to fit and make sense. Glad to help. :)
