Big Macklemore fan, here. I actually thought this was pretty bad. I mean, the musicianship is good; drummer has the right feel, the pianist has great skills, and the bass player has period-appropriate style. Vocals lost me. Firstly, the censoring of the words bothered me. Either leave them in, or change them to period-appropriate words. "Freaking" is not one of them. Secondly, the vocal melody is flat. Her melody and verses have very little range and are very monotonous. It left me bored. Macklemore's laid-back style is lost in translation.

 • How is the melody flat? I'm going to assume you don't listen to much jazz. The whole thing is in the same key as Macklemore's version. And its in Rag-time. Its not supposed to be "laid-back" The alteration of the lyrics for censorship purposes, was likely not an attempt to use "period appropriate language" but allow it to appeal to a broader audience. Perhaps older people who don't care for the vernacular used by today's youth. Monotonous means "Lacking in variation in tone or pitch". If anything her version is more varied than the original. It's ok that you were "bored" by it, that's your opinion. However I encourage you to give it another listen, and for that matter, listen to more Jazz.
