Remember that truck the LAPD shot up?

Apparently they're going to replace it:
Most of you were rightfully incredulous over the Los Angeles Police Department's shooting of two innocent women following a case of mistaken truck identity during their search for alleged killer ex-cop Christopher Dorner. How did the cops mistake the women's blue Toyota Tacoma for Dorner's gray Nissan Titan? Why did they shoot first and ask questions later? Why did they unload dozens of rounds into the truck? Well, now the LAPD says they want to make it up to Margie Carranza, 47, and her mother, Emma Hernandez, 71, who were out delivering newspapers the morning they were shot by police. The cops will get the women a new pickup truck, reports the Los Angeles Times. How nice! During the incident, Hernandez was shot twice in the back, and Carranza received injuries from some broken glass, the newspaper reported. Hernandez has since been released from the hospital. An LAPD police commander met with the two of them Saturday, and Police Chief Charlie Beck apologized on behalf of the department. From the Times:
Beck has called the incident "a tragic misinterpretation" by officers working under "incredible tension" hours after Dorner allegedly shot three police officers, one fatally.
And as an added bonus, Carranza and Hernandez will getting a new truck apparently paid for by donors. The story doesn't say what kind of truck it will be. Something with bulletproof glass this time, perhaps? Meanwhile, Dorner remains on the loose, and he has a growing fanbase on the Internet. Dorner's gray Titan was found in Big Bear with weapons inside after he apparently torched it. Maybe this means the LAPD will stop shooting at random people in trucks now.
Some of the commenters brought up the fact that accepting the new truck might make it more difficult or even impossible for them to sue. What do you think of this? Would you accept the truck if it meant you couldn't sue? Would you accept the truck and then try to sue anyways?

Wow, a whole new truck! That totally makes up for getting shot in the back -- twice.

  • A new truck? Well, that makes everything okay.

  • ...I would only expect this. I mean, you -blam!-ing shot them. The least you can do is buy them a new truck.

  • What if the police killed the 2 women. Which they could have. "Sorry we shot up your truck, at least you didn't die right?"

  • Just shows how corrupt the police force is. "You were shot at by our officers? Sorry sorry, here's a car paid for by donors. Disciplinary action? No no no... those were good cops who accidentally discharge 20+ rounds into your car. It was an honest mistake". Guess what the source of the one million dollar bounty on Dorner's head is on? Private donors. Something really ****ing suspicious in going on with this BIG TIME. Do anything they can to kill Dorner, pay off anyone to minimize political repercussions, maintain the status quo.

      • Here's the problem with suing LAPD - you're really only punishing the taxpayers, not the cops involved in the incident.

        • At least they're trying to make up for it rather than just saying "yeah sorry about that" and brushing it under the rug.

          • I would decline the truck and sue the living hell out of them. Then sue them to repair the truck that the obliterated. It would cost more, and it would come back practically new anyway. Also, they were almost murdered by trigger happy cops. They have all the evidence they need to get the police department to bend over and take it.

          • They're most likely covering their asses so they don't get sued, or covering their asses so Dorner doesn't go full rambo on them.

          • Will the LAPD also be paying for her hospital bills? If not i'd sue, screw the truck.

          • They're just covering their ass here. I'm willing to bet that it will be a second class one compared to the one they had.

                • If they sue the police department they could get 20 - 30 trucks.

                • Every cop involved in the shooting should be charged with: One count of attempted murder in the first degree for every bullet fired; One count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for every bullet fired; One count of unlawfully using a firearm for every bullet fired; One count of official misconduct and; One count of use of a firearm to commit a felony for every bullet fired. Why is it that cops can get away with this simply because of "incredible tension"? Would that work for anyone else? If I saw a truck that looked like the truck of someone who had attacked me previously, I am not allowed to start shooting at the driver without provocation. I would be sent to jail for all of the charges I listed above (except for official misconduct).

Of course they can sue for pain and suffering and gross misconduct even after getting a new truck.

It said the police were giving them the truck, so I instantly thought taxpayers were going to be robbed for it, but then it said it was paid for by donors, meaning the police aren't giving them the truck but good hearted people are. Which is it?

The first statement implies that two women were shot, but the second says that one was shot twice and the other got hurt by broken glass. And yes, I would take the truck. I need a new truck.

                    • I would not accept a new truck. I would sue their balls blue. They will be able to get much more through court than a replaced truck.
