1. Activision will fund the project and Bungie will develop it. The rights to the game belongs to Bungie. Activision has the right to publish the game for the next 8 years.
2. Activision will market it by funding ads and promoting it to the general public. However, much of the marketing design will be done by Bungie since they have a mighty marketing staff. The relationship here is similar to the one they had with Microsoft though Bungie seems to have the final approval on how their game should perceive to the rest of the world.
3. Activision has tons of money and they want to make tons of money. They are also (apparently) the best publisher to support the ambitious project that Bungie's next game is.

Good summary! You have to put together information from a lot of sources but it's very clear that Activision will not maintain the rights to Destiny at the end of the contract. :)

That's really helpful info, I appreciate it. I guess I imagined Bungie to be absolutely loaded at this point, but with this ambitious of a project, I'm sure even they need help.

Edited by narcogen: 2/8/2013 3:01:17 AMI honestly don't think you spin a studio off from Microsoft and make your employees shareholders and then come out of it absolutely loaded. Anything Halo made belonged to Microsoft, so what "Bungie" had up until 2007 was whatever salaries and bonuses they were paid. My understanding is that additional investment was required to make the company independent. What they've earned since then is whatever they were contractually entitled to for making Reach and ODST; I assume more than what it cost them to make those two games and pay their ongoing expenses, but probably not enough to build up the kind of war chest you'd need to launch an entirely new franchise-- hence the Activision deal. Good point. I wasn't putting into consideration the fact that Microsoft owned the IP and therefore hindered Bungie's cash flow for their work.
