Can you leave work early if you feel like it?

often in movies or tv shows you'll hear one of the characters say something like "I'm taking off early, I've got a date!" or something to that effect. I once interned at a congressman's office and although the office was technically open till 530, almost everyone was gone by 5 everyday. Would you be comfortable or feel safe doing something like that at your job?

  • Erm, I could do that easily because I work with my mum. Crap part is she knows where I live.

  • Yes, I can leave early at any time, but I don't abuse that privilege.

  • I don't have a job yet, but I know for certain I won't be able to. If my dad tried to do that, most likely he would be fired on the spot.

  • Only on Fridays. Drinks are served in the conference rooms at 4:00, if you don't go have a drink, you can go home. Any other day, you do have to get permission, which isn't a big deal if you don't do it often.

  • I work in an office where I don't have to deal customer service or anything, so yes. Obviously if I have something big due tomorrow or time sensitive for the end of the day, I can't just say screw it and go home. But most of the time, if something comes up (waiting on a delivery at home, take dog to the vet, whatever) I can leave no problems.

  • Sure, everyone is pretty understanding. If it becomes habitual though, you won't work there very long.

  • 5 minutes early at the most and I even feel guilty for that. Unless its a closing shift and everything is done I can leave up to 30 minutes early.

  • I suppose it depends on the environment. If your boss is ok with you leaving early so long as you put in extra hours later (or some other arrangement) then I guess.

  • In one of my jobs, working at a desk, definitely no. I have another job at a grocery store where I set my own hours and schedule and can come and go whenever I please though.

  • Yes I can, but I don't usually do it. If I leave work early then I'll have more work the next day.

  • Can I? No. Usually if you're in a salary position, you can leave whenever you want, usually as long as your work is done. Hourly? Nope.

    • I can say I want to leave whenever, but I won't get the pay and somebody else will be called in.
