If people would rather die than go to prison, then keep the death penalty around, even if it is an "escape." They are still dealt with.
Can't do more evil when dead.

Are you so great that you will be immune to the harsher penalties that you desire? Unrelated (sort of): If somebody murdered one of my family members, I would not want them to go to prison and experience the horrors there, but I would instead want to put them down myself, quick and clean, and even painless for them, and call it finished, even if that was what the murderer wanted. Even if he is at peace. I still get closure.
