Combat on the ground means nothing, sadly. (Those poor Marines...) The Covenant would just take the planet anyway by glassing it. It's stated in Fall of Reach that they always did this, and that humans hardly ever won. And the discovery of Halo was a PARTIAL accident. The ship made a random jump, and Cortana jumped in the way yelling "I have these coordinates, let's see where they go!"
