Marijuana was deemed illegal by the timber industry because hemp was poised to replace a number of industries. Among them being timber to be used for paper.
It's also a double standard to allow tobacco, filled with god only knows how many additives, and alcohol yet not marijuana.

You forgot to mention cotton. I also love how it was ILLEGAL for a farmer in Delaware NOT to grow hemp until 1888 because it was vital to this country.
