The powers of the president are extensive. Executive actions are effective changes of the law without Congressional approval. He has direct control of our armed forces, can grant amnesty, commutations, reprieves, and even pardons. He can establish informal treaties with foreign leaders (executive agreements) without Congressional approval; he can choose not to disclose information deemed to be a matter of national security (executive privilege). He appoints any vacancies in the Supreme Court; appoints the head of the major departments of the United States which are responsible for a huge portion of the American bureaucracy. Perhaps most obvious of all, he is able to veto laws that have been passed by Congress and, in today's divided Congress, effectively kill them. Obama is no monarch, but he is the president, and that office has tremendous power that he can utilize to achieve his policy goals without shredding the constitution.

  • One of the executive actions Obama passed was "train police better". Almost literally. Oh no! What a tyrant!

  • He can make whatever treaties, sure. But they aren't valid unless Congress ratifies them. Remember the START fiasco? Obama signed it and then it got filibustered for no reason. Yes, he has direct control of our armed forces, but he can't just order them to do whatever he'd like. And yes, he can approve Justices to SCOTUS, but again, they need congressional approval. Have you guys even taken a civics class yet? If you did, I hope you got poor marks, because I don't think you learned much.

  • There is a difference between an executive agreement and a treaty. Both have the same power, with the exception that the former does not require Congressional approval and is up to the discretion of the next president for enforcement. He has direct control, which means Congress has no say what the armed forces do after they ENTER a conflict (with the exception of exiting). His appointments need Senatorial approval, yes, but rarely is that ever an issue. Senatorial courtesy results in the approval process being just a formality. The president has significant power. If you don't understand this basic fact, you shouldn't be asking US whether we've taken civics courses.

  • I believe it was Truman who sent the Navy to Korea without Congressional approval and when Congress was mad, he said something to the sort of "Well, if they don't approve the budget, they'll be stuck in Korea with no way home".
