Black/dark grey was a much better color as a background as it allowed for easy viewings on the eyes. White is a much more aggressive, straining color. It's not people being sensitive. It's people being subjected to a weakness of their physiology. Granted, in a very controlled, first-world sense, but it still is a physiological weakness.
