Piracy is only excusable in a couple scenarios:
1 - the title is long out of print, and you've taken reasonable measures to obtain it legally.
2 - the title is not sold in your country, and you've taken reasonable measures to obtain it legally.
Anything else, and you're being a cheap bastard.

I'd disagree. 'Piracy' is in fact perfectly acceptable (and I think legal) if you already own a copy in the same format. Like were I to buy FarCry 3 on the PC in disc form, downloading it for free is fine because I already own the rights to use the IP and am merely making a digital backup. As far as the e-book - if its published by the same people, then maybe, though there are associated costs with digitising. I would argue that I already own the books and again would just be making a digital backup so I think that is probably acceptable as well.

You're absolutely right, I'm a cheap bastard. Oh well.
-
So I'm a "cheap bastard" if I prefer to read a book I already own on my phone rather than lugging the actual copy around with me?
-
Only if you pirate said book, you are.
