The guy should've been restrained. Generally mauling the shit out of him doesn't make you any better than he is.

The violent reaction was pretty much inevitable. I'd be pissed of too if someone tried to murderer the leader of a political party that I fancied. The human race has many flaws, violent behavior is one of them.
