It gets better. But, if you plan on dieting you should get a good calorie counter. Livestrong has a pretty good journal. If you have a Droid or iPhone you could use MyFitnessPal which is a very good one as well. Both will help you set a goal for losing weight and what amount of calories you should be eating to attain that.

With all of the fitness and nutrition-related technology out there, tech/gamer geeks like us have no excuse for not getting into shape :-) Also, OP, I'd advise you to start exercising sooner rather than later. Muscle burns a lot of calories, far more than fat, and if you're exercising enough, you will be able to eat more and still lose weight. Doesn't mean you can go back to candy bars and soda, but it does mean you'll be able to eat a nice, big (healthily cooked) piece of chicken, lean beef, or fish without feeling guilty about it. And when you're exercising and eating more, you will feel a lot less miserable. Those feelings of always being hungry are a big reason a lot of people fall off their diets and gain the weight back. I've been there myself a few times. Adding in exercise is a key component :-D
