I don't think anyone with the power to make these decisions has said they're going to outright ban all weapons. So stop being hyperbolic and crying about the government trying to completely disarm you. There's a huge difference between being completely defenseless and owning a handgun, shotgun, or hunting rifle with a 10 round max capacity.
Honestly, 30 round "assault weapon" rifles are overkill - the number of innocent lives saved by a US civilian having an extra 20 rounds and significantly increased effective range in the last decade can probably be counted on your hands. The number of people killed by criminals or psychopaths due to the substantially increased lethality is probably a noticeable statistic. The game isn't going to be completely changed by banning them, but it is a step in the right direction.

Interestingly though what most people agree on as "assault weapons" ( which really needs to be defined if we are going to use it) are not used by criminals often. Most gun crimes are committed with a concealed weapon, generally a revolver or pistol. It's this same kind of reactionary fear mongering that gave us the Patriot Act folks. Lets stop and have a reasonable discourse before we start banning things to spite each other.

This, right here. +1 for being reasonable.
